Matt Taibbi questions America's sanity

Progressive icon David Sirota says writer Matt Taibbi—who followed William Greider and the late, great Hunter Thompson at Rolling Stone—is "the best American journalism has to offer." I concur, and not just because I had the great pleasure of interviewing the brilliant madman myself.

Taibbi's new book The Great Derangement goes on sale May 6 and he and Eric Merola have put out a promotional video for it that roasts a corrupt White House and an acquiescent corporate media for eight years of greed, terror and blatant, murderous lies.

His fellow citizens aren't exactly spared, either. "Americans are now supposed to make their own sense of the world, but are the right messages even reaching our collective brain?" asks Taibbi. "Are the halves of that brain even connected? Do we know who we are anymore? Are we sane? It's a hell of a problem for a nuclear power."

KX XV

The other night on 'The Late Show' I heard Paul Shaffer and his band cover the song "We Were Born to Be Loved" by beloved grunge pioneers King's X. It's not the first time Shaffer's performed KX songs during commercials, he seems to be a fan, especially of that song as legendary KX bassist Doug Pinnick said last year:

PINNICK: Paul Shaffer got on our bus one time after a show. He and a couple of his band members came down to see us play at a club in NY. I was changing, and one of my techs comes onto the bus and says, "Paul Shaffer and a bunch of people, his band I guess want to come on the bus and say hello!" My immediate reaction was, "Bring em on!" And they marched straight to the back of the bus and we hung out back there. Paul says to Ty, "So who does your samples?" Ty replied, "Samples? What samples?" Paul said, "Vocal samples." Ty said, "Nobody. We sing!" Paul said, "Hmmm?" Then he said, "So that last song you did that had all the starts and stops in it, what's the name of that song?" We said, "Born to be loved." He said, "We're gonna do that song!" Ty chuckled at him and he said, "No seriously, we're going to do that song on the CBS Late Show!" (Now) Paul Shaffer plays "Born to be Loved" on Letterman all the time and we get paid for it! Dude, every 6 months we get a royalty check from them playing that. It's paid bills. It's like awesome!

King's X, who happen to be my favorite band in the world, are set to release their 15th album--appropriately entitled 'XV'--on May 20. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of it... and their other 14 albums too while you're at it, each is a hard rock gem. In the meantime, check out one of the tracks from 'XV' at Doug's MySpace site.

Obama makes a molehill out of a mountain

Huffington Post and others tried to capitalize on this earlier, an out-of-context quote from Obama supposedly characterizing rural Pennsylvanians as bitter, gun-totin' nutballs. If you read the original quote in context, you'll see how Jake Tapper et al. could carve it up for cheap hits on a slow Friday.

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
Having been set up for easy lay-ups, both Team Magoo and No. 2 went in for some gimme points by issuing snarkments on this non-story.

Well, Sen. Obama slaps them both down with his just-issued response to it all:
...I made this statement -- so, here's what rich. Senator Clinton says 'No, I don't think that people are bitter in Pennsylvania. You know, I think Barack's being condescending.' John McCain says, 'Oh, how could he say that? How could he say people are bitter? You know, he's obviously out of touch with people.'

Out of touch? Out of touch? I mean, John McCain -- it took him three tries to finally figure out that the home foreclosure crisis was a problem and to come up with a plan for it, and he's saying I'm out of touch? Senator Clinton voted for a credit card-sponsored bankruptcy bill that made it harder for people to get out of debt after taking money from the financial services companies, and she says I'm out of touch? No, I'm in touch. I know exactly what's going on. I know what's going on in Pennsylvania. I know what's going on in Indiana. I know what's going on in Illinois. People are fed-up. They're angry and they're frustrated and they're bitter. And they want to see a change in Washington and that's why I'm running for President of the United States of America.

Richardson says Viva Obama

This may be the final blow to Sen. Clinton's bleak hopes for the White House. At least Gov. Richardson, who worked for Pres. Bill Clinton, waited till after Texas to endorse Obama likely out of respect and loyalty to his old friends. This must have been tough for him, but apparently it was tougher for Hillary.

The endorsement from Richardson:

Cheney gives a big FU to America

Dick Cheney spoke frankly on Good Morning America today in re: to 5th Anniversary of the Grand Blunder. Via Think Progress:

CHENEY: On the security front, I think there's a general consensus that we’ve made major progress, that the surge has worked. That's been a major success.

RADDATZ: Two-third of Americans say it's not worth fighting.

CHENEY: So?

RADDATZ So? You don't care what the American people think?

CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls

Big Dick also doesn't give a shit what the Pentagon thinks either. Despite the exhaustive report it recently released showing virtually no connection between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, Cheney (during his "surprise" visit to Iraq) insists there was one, so his word alone justifies our five years of clusterfuck.

Mind you, he was answering a Gannonesque softball tossed to him at the Baghdad news conference by his own official biographer, a guy who wrote a book entirely devoted to justifying Cheney's delusions.

Video: Dodd endorses Obama

Former Democratic White House contender and progressive hero Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) today endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) for president. Excerpts of prepared statements from both follow the video.

STATEMENT FROM SEN. CHRIS DODD: "I am here to express my strong support for the candidacy of Barack Obama. This is a moment of unity in our country, a time where we need to come together as a Democratic party and to get behind a candidacy that expresses the aspirations, the hopes, the ambitions of millions and millions of Americans. And I believe that Barack Obama has demonstrated that not only in the campaign, but also in his service to his state and his country..."

STATEMENT FROM SEN. BARACK OBAMA: "It has been my pleasure to serve alongside Chris Dodd in the United States Senate and share a stage with him during his principled run for the presidency. ... [A]s passionate as Chris Dodd is about the causes he champions, he also has that rare ability to disagree without being disagreeable. He is respected on both sides of the aisle for his authenticity, reason, and civility. And that is how, time and again, he's been able to bring Democrats and Republicans together to make a real difference in the lives of the American people. ... He conducted his campaign for President with that same character. He resisted the cheap and easy shots, and elevated the debate with important ideas about how to address the great challenges we face. He and I share a deep commitment to take our country in a new direction, and I am grateful for his endorsement."
